how long will a flashlight running on a 1 d cell energizer battery last?
Battery life depends on several factors. 1. The capacity of the battery in milliamp/hours. 2. the wattage and type of bulb fitted to the flashlight.
mercury alkaline (Energiser) batteries do not usually state their capacity but should have a capacity of about 1500 Milliamp hours. Bulbs for this type should have a drain of about 0.25amps which = 250 milliamps. therefore expected life will be approx. 1500 divide by 250 = 6 hours.
D type NiMH batteries are now very big in capacity. ( Even an AA cell can now be obtained in about 3000ma/hr.) So you could double this life on the same type of bulb. Empty D size adaptor casings are now available to contain an AA size NiMH cell, since the latest AA types can have a much higher capacity than even the Energiser types.
Using the latest LED bulbs you can double the life again.
